Ausdroid: The home of fine talent and great information — become a part of the team

I am -- as you may know -- currently on hiatus from my writing duties over at Ausdroid. This allows me to focus more on my schooling and other important factors in my life. This also means that there's a void over at Ausdroid that needs to be filled. To counter this, Team Ausdroid are looking for one (or two) new writers to join up and write about Android news and shhttuff that's currently happening in Australia. So if you're a budding writer, have a genuine interest in Android and want... (Keep reading..)

Why I don’t see the new Facebook Messenger application taking off

About a week ago, Facebook launched a new application for iOS and Android: Facebook Messenger. It's a standalone application that doesn't have anything to do with the Facebook application. Instead it's just the messaging aspect of the application, except in overdrive. What Facebook is trying to do is curb the need for SMS -- which carriers make millions from -- and replace it with their free service. Facebook Messenger appears to be the mobile version of Facebook's newly-integrated messaging and inbox system on the desktop site. You have all... (Keep reading..)

The Nexus Program: The basics of how it works

Ever wondered how the Nexus devices come about? I certainly have, and during today's Google + Motorola event they let loose a bit of information as to how the Nexus program works. What we already knew from Andy Rubin, is that there's a manufacturing partner, a chipset partner and a carrier partner (in the U.S.A. at least). Today we learnt that Google gives the manufacturer 9 months starting from Christmas to design, develop and mass-produce a device that will run the latest version of Android well; better yet, perfectly. If that's... (Keep reading..)

Samsung are awesome, and they know it too

Whether you love them or hate them, you've got to admit Samsung are pretty darn awesome. Not only have they been okay with users unlocking and destroying their Android devices since very early days -- unlike other manufacturers *glares at HTC and Motorola* -- they're also completely supportive of the unofficial Android development community. Not all that long ago they sent members of the CyanogenMod development team brand new Galaxy S II's for free. Yes, I know that it's also a marketing gimmick... (Keep reading..)

Minecraft makes its way to Android in more ways than one

I was extremely excited to hear about Minecraft coming to Android when it was announced way back February, and now the day has come where Minecraft is now readily available -- for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, that is. Today Mojang, the development studio behind Minecraft, launched Minecraft Pocket Edition on the Android Market for $6.99 (USD). The only problem is that's an exclusive for the Xperia Play. Mojang stated that Minecraft PE would indeed be coming to other Android device in the future, but for now... (Keep reading..)

Google purchases Motorola Mobility along with 17,000 patents for 12.5 billion dollars

Whether you like them or not, Motorola Mobility -- the mobile division of Motorola -- will soon be completely owned by Google after agreeing to a sale price of 12.5 billion USD. That's a premium of 63% over the normal share price, meaning that each share was sold for $40 in cold hard cash. The deal is yet to get the green light from shareholders and government regulatory bodies, however, we should see all start to happen very soon since Google does have this kind of money just lazing around. If... (Keep reading..)

App Review: Trial Xtreme

I can't recall ever writing a review for an application -- though I do talk about apps quite a lot on the Ausdroid Podcast. So here it is, a quick review of a game I've been playing quite a lot recently: Trial Xtreme developed by Galapagos. As you could have probably put together by the name and screenshot above, Trial Xtreme is indeed a trial biking game for Android. I downloaded the paid version off the Android Market which set me back around $2. In the game there are... (Keep reading..)

Acer Iconia Tab A100 expected to launch in Australia in the next 6 to 8 weeks for $500

It seems man and his dog is making a basic Android tablet these days, Acer being no exception to this rule. A couple of months ago they launched the Acer Iconia Tab A500 here in Australia which is -- like every other Android tablet -- 10-inch, dual-core Tegra 2 and looks slightly ugly. Now thanks to the Android 3.2 release which allows 7-inch display support, Acer will be launching the 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 in the next 6 to 8 weeks. Specs of the Iconia Tab A100 include: 7-inch 1024x600... (Keep reading..)

It seems 720p displays are the next big thing for Android devices

As I've found out in the last year and a half of reporting on Android device news, it gets to this time of year (August to October) when all the rumours of the next generation phones -- and now tablets -- start to find their way onto the internet. Last year it was all about dual-core and being able to shoot video in full 1080p. This year, it seems, is all about which phones and tablets will have the highest resolution displays. In the recent weeks we've seen multiple devices -- their specs at least -- leaked onto the Interweb.. Samsung with... (Keep reading..)
